Local Man - Nick Miller & Below Zero team up for Legalize Trans* Event - Jan 27th

below_zero_event.jpgNick Miller is helping host a fundraiser for the organization Legalize Trans*. He describes it as, "sort of a counter to the massive Legalize Gay campaign (which is a very effective and positive campaign), however seems a little exclusive to the G part of the GLBT spectrum. My good friend, Asher Koleboi who is a trans man, had the idea to create similar shirts, but this time said Legalize Trans* as a voice for all the trans folks out there who are so often disregarded, marginalized, and thrown 'under the bus' by the GLB community, and obviously the straight community also."

Next Thursday, January 27th, at Below Zero there is a karaoke fundraiser with the hopes of selling Legalize Trans* merchandise (the founder will be on hand!) and raising money for the organization. There is no cover, but any donations, purchases, or raffle tickets bought would come in handy! The money donated goes to helping educate the community about transgender people, their needs, training on how to be an ally, and funding the costs of surgeries for trans folks near and far. It really will be a stellar night and if you support the trans community, and just want to know more, come on out. Event is slated to start at 10pm.

For more info write Nick Miller.

Local Blogger quoted in book - Obama and the Gays

Screen shot 2010-12-29 at Dec 29, 2010 4.02.52 PM.png

Local blogger, Will Kohler, Covington, Kentucky, owner and publisher of Back2Stonewall is quoted in a newly released book by Tracy Baim and other contributors.

Will Kohler of called on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and heterosexual allies to “STAND WITH US (LITERALLY) and wherever you are, you are in Washington, D.C., New York, California, or Missouri. That at if you present at or watching the Inauguration of STAND SILENTLY AND TURN YOUR BACK ON WARREN as he is introduced and STAY with you back turned in SILENCE until he has finished. We will do this not only as a display of our dismay at having him involved but also as a SYMBOL of PROTEST showing that all of us despite our sexual orientation, race or gender will not stand for and ‘turn our backs’ on the bigotry and hate that Warren embodies.”

According to Kohler, he was referring in to Obama’s inauguration where anti-gay bigot Rev. Rick Warren gave the opening prayer at the event on January 20, 2009.

The book is available for sale at Obama and the Gays - a Political Marriage.

Back2Stonewall is described by its publisher as "An Unapologetic LGBT and Straight Supportive News, Media, Music, and Activism Website for Unapologetic Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trangender and Straight Supportive People."

Kohler's blog has been up and running two years.

Senate to Proceed on DADT Repeal

In a historic vote Saturday morning that seemed highly improbable just weeks earlier, the U.S. Senate approved a stand-alone bill to proceed on repealing the military’s 17-year-old ban on lesbians and gays serving openly in the military. Advocate story is here.

Now, let Hurricane Summers show you how (not?) to celebrate in the next post below.

UPDATE: The final vote has finished with 65-31 vote to repeal.
