Tickets for Pride Night at Kings Island, Friday September 10, 2010 - are now available on line. Thee Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati will also begin selling tickets during normal business hours starting mid July. Pride Night at KI is the one of the regions largest GLBT & Allies event in the mid west.

This is the 14th year Kings Island has hosted this major fund raiser for the Center. The parking area opens at 5:30 pm, gate at 6:00 pm, with event ending at midnight.

Currently, the following acts/entertainment have been confirmed: Steve Reeder & William Brown from the Inapppropriate Couch, and (the) fundamentalists. QNation.FM http://www.qnation.fm/ will also be broadcasting live from the event and providing the music.

The event is brought to you in part by these sponsors: the Gay Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cincinnati, The Word, Qnation.fm , Kings Island and the Gay & Lesbian Community of Greater Cincinnati, and the GLBT News.

All tickets, whether purchased on line or at the Center will include free parking at Kings Island. The gate price is $45, the pre-event price both on-line at the Center is $40 - all prices the same as 2009. Additional discounts are available on-line ONLY when purchasing blocks of 7 or more tickets with a credit card,which lowers the price per tickets to $36.00.

When the Center begins selling tickets at its location mid-July, we will only accept cash or checks with a license or state identification card. The fine print: this is an exclusive fund raiser for the Center and no season passes or other discount passes are honored the night of the event; children rides and the water park will not be open; there will be no "after glow" party; the Center will not be offering any special accommodation packages at local hotels.

No additional volunteers will be needed this year, as the Center relies on their regular front desk volunteers who routinely run the Center to staff the Center. Additionally, no organization booths will be set up this year in the Festhaus area before the entertainment.

With the traditional Pride season approaching, I thought it was time for an update. This year sees Cincinnati Pride Parade and Festival return to Downtown. Equinox Cincinnati - Gay PRIDE 2010 runs July 2-4, with the Parade stepping off from the corner of E 5th & Sentinel Streets at 11am on Sunday, July 4, and ending at the Festival on Fountain Square.

This year's events are presented by the Greater Cincinnati Gay Chamber of Commerce.

Every once in awhile I like to share an example of the sort of email that sometimes comes to Rainbow Cincinnati. This is the latest, from Jerrymaineville@aol.com, unedited:

"first of all. i do not hate gays.i do not hate any one.i just dislike.you people want to get married and have kids.you teach your gay crap to young boys and girls as young as 10 to 12 years old.you do not tell their moms and dads what you teach them.why is that.you want pass new gay laws.you want to get rid of dont ask dont tell.you wants yo know their sleeping next to gay guy.when i was in the army. we had one gay guy.we all knowed he was gay. but he kept hid mouth shut.and he did not act gay.i want to ask you. why do you teach young kids about gay sex acts.i am so happy i do not have kids in school.i sure would not like it all. bye"

I can't tell whether he doesn't have kids or just doesn't send them to school. I hope it is the former.

As I like to paraphrase Pogo, "we have met the enemy and he is illiterate."

The Census: What Box Do You Check?

Wondering how to fill out your Census form? From an article on gayrights.change.org:

If you are in a relationship and you live together ... There are 16 choices, but the two that concern you are "husband or wife" and "unmarried partner."

This is the important part: You do not answer based on the actual legal status of your relationship, you answer based on how you personally categorize your relationship. If you are legally married, you will probably mark down “husband or wife,” though if you are in a civil union or domestic partnership, yet you still feel married, than you should also mark “husband or wife.” If there is no legal recognition of your relationship where you live, but you still consider yourself married, it’s also important that you mark “husband or wife.”

If this box doesn’t accurately represent your relationship, you have the option of the “unmarried partner” box. If this sounds like a vague catch-all, that’s because it is. The Guide to the American Community Survey says “An ‘Unmarried partner,’ also known as a domestic partner, is a person who shares a close personal relationship with Person 1.” If this better describes your relationship, than please mark the “unmarried partner” box.

Pride Night 2010 at Kings Island set for Friday, September 10, 2010 - Support local Gay & Lesbian Community Center

One of SW Ohio's biggest Pride friendly events has been scheduled for Friday, September 10, 2010. We're talking about "Pride Night at Kings Island" in Mason, Ohio. This marks the 14th year the amusement park has hosted this fundraiser for the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati.

The gate opens at 6:00 pm and the event concludes at 12 midnight. Look for more details at Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati this summer - when a link will be posted for Kings Island on-line ticket store. Email for Pride Night 2010. KI regular season passes are NOT honored the night or the event and children's rides will not be open.

Cincinnati's Gay and Lesbian Community Center opened in 1993. It offers group space, various programs and shares information on how to contact and connect with the local GLBT community.

Or, donate $10 to Red Cross Haiti relief by texting the word HAITI to 90999. From the Red Cross site, "There has been an outpouring of support from the public. To help, people can make an unrestricted donation to the International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). The public can also help by texting “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross, through an effort backed by the U.S. State Department. Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti."

Gay & Lesbian Center Elects Board - Rusty Lockett - President

Rusty Lockett was elected President of the Board of Gay and Lesbian Community Center at the group’s December 16, 2009 meeting. Also elected, John Maddux – Vice President, Teresa Shepherd – Treasurer, and Adam Reilly – Clerk. Michael Chanak was elected to another two year “at large” term. Continuing service on the Board is Michael Hollenbeck who was not up for re-election.

Outgoing President, Bill Abney was term limited per the by-laws, he and the other outgoing board member, Jessica Fogle, who did not seek re-election, will continue as “volunteers” at the Center.

Rusty had been the organization’s clerk for over a year, served as Event Chair for Pride Night at Kings Island this past September and has been a long time Pride and Pride Night volunteer. He also has served on the Vestry of Church of Our Saviour in Mt. Auburn and as convener of the local GLBT Episcopal worship group called Integrity.

Teresa Shepherd, a certified public accountant, has been both on the Board and served as bookkeeper of the organization over the past year. Adam Reilly is also a Men’s Safe Sex educator for STOP AIDS, a local AIDS education and service organization.

Both John Maddux and Michael Chanak are long-time volunteers and activists having served many years in community organizations. Michael Hollenbeck, Board member at large, also volunteers with the Human Right Campaign Cincinnati.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati opened in late 1993. It serves as a resource to the local GLBT and ally community, offering meeting space and programs. The Center is located on the first floor of 4119 Hamilton Avenue in the Northside district of Cincinnati. The mailing address of the organization is PO Box 23159, Cincinnati, OH 45223.

Now that Mark Bailey is posting more of the Gay Cable Network videos to YouTube, this was the perfect time for Rainbow Cincinnati to repost this piece and alert you to the GCN-Cincinnati Channel on YouTube.

Historical Note: When originally aired in 1986, a caller to a powerful right-wing AM talk radio show said GCN "sodomized a turkey" on TV. GCN was immediately invited into the station to "answer" this charge. The program became more famous that night to many people who, otherwise, would never have given it a 2nd look.
